5 Days Mid-Range Safari – Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater & Tarangire National Park
Overview
This safari covers four of the best national parks in Tanzania. Lake Manyara is a soft introduction to safari, winding around a mostly forested route between the Soda Water Lake and the Great Rift escarpment. The Serengeti is famous for huge concentrations of wildlife, especially big cats, and is home to the Great Migration. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact caldera, a spectacular bowl about 265 sq km with walls up to 600m deep, home to 20,000–30,000 animals at any time. Tarangire is known for great migratory movement, birdlife, and a stunning baobab-dotted landscape with large elephant herds in the dry season.
Itinerary
Pick up at 8:00am from your hotel in Arusha and depart for Lake Manyara National Park with a picnic lunch for a full day game drive. Lush forests of acacia and mahogany set the mood as you enter the park. Watch for buffalo, giraffe, impala, baboon and blue monkey, along with the park's tree-climbing lions and, in season, a shoreline turned pink by flamingos. Return to your lodge for dinner.
After breakfast, head toward the Serengeti via the high farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descending into the endless plains of the Serengeti. Arrive at the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park thanks to the Seronera River, in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive.
A morning game drive in the Serengeti, then depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with a picnic lunch. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest collapsed volcanic crater in the world, surrounded by a ring of extinct volcanoes, its floor dotted with watering holes sheltering around 30,000 animals.
After an early breakfast, descend to the crater floor for a 6-hour game drive. Expect lions, elephants, zebra, hippo, flamingo, jackal, rhino, antelope and many birds, including eagle, vulture, stork, sacred ibis and kori bustard. After a picnic lunch at the Hippo Pool, ascend the crater rim for the drive to your accommodation in Karatu.
The final day begins at 8:00am after breakfast. Tanzania's third largest national park is known for its majestic baobab trees and the Tarangire River, centrepiece of some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. Expect lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, oryx, eland, giraffe and zebra. By mid-afternoon, head back toward Arusha, arriving by around 6:00pm.
